through more effective teaching and learning. Ensuring sustainable progress. “Look up at the stars and not down at your feet.” S Hawking

Executive Summary

After more than 30 amazing years as a teacher, in December 2015 I was thrilled to launch Estrellar Education, in an effort to underpin the moral purpose of any civilized society, by specialising in and encouraging creative approaches to teaching and learning.

Through coaching, mentoring and professional development and training, Estrellar Education aims to promote a creative and refreshing approach to raising the standards of teaching and learning, which makes learning both fun and rigorous, and acknowledges the range of contexts for both the teacher and the learner.

Estrellar Education services are always prepared in partnership with clients, specifically tailored to the individual or small group, so as to enable the otherwise disaffected teacher and/or learner to engage, enjoy and achieve through a deeper teaching and learning process. Estrellar Education also aims to support those learners and colleagues who might be described as ‘more able’, to be effectively challenged and become more reflective practitioners, so that they too can make sustainable progress.

This February (2019), filling the shoes of a valued and experienced colleague at very short notice - especially when the pressure of A level exams looms large - was a monumental task indeed. Jim did exactly that for us at Loughborough Grammar School and helped us successfully navigate a potentially devastating end of year for boys that really valued his expertise and his ability to slot in seamlessly to their classes. Jim was able to strike exactly the right balance with them from the get go and helped to ensure there was little or no impact on their studies or damage to thier exam results. Jim is an enthusiastic and professional educationalist, with a wealth of experience who would fit in anywhere and make a positive difference.

During a frantic 2018 autumn term at King Edwards VI, with two members of staff off long term, my other business colleague and I were extremely busy. Jim came in and saved us; he got on with things so well that I basically forgot that he was coming in and taking classes as everything ran incredibly smoothly. Furthermore, Jim made a really big, positive, impact in the relatively short time he was with us. The students thoroughly enjoyed Jim's lessons so much that a number were clearly disappointed, or rather gutted, when he left us.

James is a highly thought of professional colleague in the world of GCE and GCSE Business qualifications. As his Chair of Examiners, I found him always to be at the leading edge of developments to protect and raise standards but always with the students' best interests at heart.

The best business practitioner I've ever met and had the pleasure of working with. Jim made incredible efforts with all his students over the years at my school and shared with me and many other colleagues the ability to share the knowledge, skills and above all passion for teaching constantly. Quite simply, 'Outstanding'!!

James (Mr Byng) is an exceptional individual on an academic and personal level. Mr Byng's teaching style is very pragmatic; he takes his students to organisations to bring case studies to life, enabling students to apply what has been taught in the classroom. He respects his students and allows them to be themselves, appreciating individuality His teaching is second to none.

Mr James Byng is a remarkable teacher who makes lessons enjoyable by incorporating real life projects and case studies in the classroom. The way in which he teaches is unique; he creates his own methods of teaching, making it easier for students of all abilities to understand and really learn in order to answer any question in an exam.

I was finding A Level Economics difficult until a teacher at my school recommended James as a private tutor. James' patient and supportive approach has enabled me to grow in confidence and believe in my abilities as a student and, furthermore, think as an economist. His own subject knowledge and appreciation of examination technique is outstanding. With his guidance I have raised my predicted grade from an E to a B in less than four months.

"James really turned around our son's approach to Economics, and was excellent at motivating him and clarifying the concepts and learning process so that he grew with confidence in the subject over the course of the year. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend James and would certainly ask him to tutor our younger children if they choose to study Economics - which I hope they do!"

James's Staff Training Session in February 2018 was creative, heartfelt and engaging. As a result we give a standing ovation for the commendable input he gave to us all that day. It was indeed very useful, informative session regarding effective teaching strategies; best practices in classroom which gave us a lot of confidence and exposure towards active learning.

On Friday I had the privilege of meeting for the first time in 25 yrs and having lunch with my former college business studies tutor - James Byng. One of the first people to inspire me to believe that 'anything is possible' simply by taking the time to understand how to get the best out of me and not treating me and every other student as a 'number'.

As a relatively new teacher of A Level Business it was great to use James' extensive examiner experience in quality assuring our year 13 mock papers. He marked both papers, gave individual feedback, provided a full report with guidance for going forwards and my students really appreciated it. The CPD for staff has been invaluable and I would have no hesitation at all in recommending James to other teachers. In fact I would say no matter how long you have been teaching, making use of this process with James is invaluable in improving you and your students.
